John Welsh, Ph.D.

John specializes in bioprocess development. His consulting projects have focused on CMC and process development support for start-ups, implementation of high-throughput automated chromatography screening workflows, and providing process economic modeling guidance for various clients.
He previously worked in protein purification for over ten years at Merck where he helped lead technology initiatives and supported the biologics pipeline for early and late stage development programs as both a downstream lead and overall CMC lead. This included supporting tech transfers; toxicology, clinical, and commercial production campaigns; and appropriate regulatory filings. He earned a Ph.D. and M.S. in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University and a B.A. and B.E. in Engineering from Dartmouth College where he was a member of the track & field and cross country teams.
His work has been published in journals including Biotechnology and Bioengineering, Biotechnology Progress, and Journal of Chromatography A. He is an active member of AIChE and ACS and a current editor for Biotechnology Progress.
